Using Bitstream Vault

Using Bitstream Vault

If you currently have passwords saved in your browser, this guide walks you through exporting them and importing them into Vault.

Exported password files are unencrypted CSV files. Anyone who can open the file can read your passwords in plain text. Delete the file immediately after importing.

Export from your browser

Select your browser:

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu (top right) > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager
  2. In the left sidebar, select Settings
  3. Next to Export passwords, select Download file

Your passwords will be saved as a .csv file.

Import into Bitstream Vault

You can import via the browser extension or the web vault. Either method works — use whichever is more convenient. Select your preferred method:

  1. Open the Bitstream Vault browser extension
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Vault options
  4. Select Import items
  5. From the File format dropdown, select the format matching your export: Chrome (csv) or Microsoft Edge (csv)
  6. Select Choose File and select the .csv file you exported
  7. Select Import data
Importing does not check for duplicates. If you import the same file more than once, duplicate entries will be created in your vault.

Delete the exported file

Once your passwords are confirmed in Vault, permanently delete the .csv file from your computer. On Windows, use Shift+Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin.
